The Bum's Rush by Paul Milligan

The Bum’s Rush #96

WARNING! None of the news or rumors you see here in The Bum’s Rush should be considered FACT until it actually happens. It might never happen. How do you know I’m not just making all this crap up? I could, you know. You’ve been warned!

Last Shot

Assuming that this column goes up tonight (Tuesday) then I have one last shot at making a few wild assumptions and at least one conspiracy theory before the final issue of Civil War hits stores on Wednesday.

The most widely held theory about the end of Civil War is that Captain America is going to bite the big one. The evidence is there, from Marvel’s completely see-through attempts at misdirection (ala the Iron Man: Steve Rogers “leak”) to the conspicuous absence of a Captain America title from Marvel’s solicitations following the Civil War finale. Of course it’s since been revealed that there will indeed be a Captain America title when the dust settles but when reading the newly “declassified” solicitation copy for both Captain America #25 and 26 one can’t help but notice how intentionally vague it is:

Trust us, folks, this oversized 25th issue will stun readers and send shockwaves through the entire Marvel Universe for the next year!

CAPTAIN AMERICA #26
Written by ED BRUBAKER
Pencils and Cover by STEVE EPTING
While the Marvel Universe reels from the bizarre and shocking incidents of last issue, and repercussions ripple outward, the Winter Soldier finally chooses a side, after the Civil War has ended -- his own. But what are the Red Skull and his minions up to behind the scenes. These questions and more will be answered as the most shocking Cap story so far races right through the aftermath of the Civil War!
32 PGS./Rated T+ …$2.99
FOC – 5/3, On-Sale – 5/23/2007

You might notice that there’s no mention of Captain America himself actually appearing in these issues. Which leads me to the following conclusion (which is based heavily on A.C. Hall’s own theory, which he shared with us in this very column a few weeks ago) – Captain America will indeed “die” in the final issue of Civil War. However, his “death” will be a manufactured one, a stunt to bring an end to the War, possibly cooked up by Iron Man and Cap together, while Cap himself will go into hiding as… wait for it… Iron Man! You see we know that, following Civil War, Tony Stark becomes the director of SHIELD and probably has to give up being Iron Man. But we also know that Iron Man is part of The Mighty Avengers team. So what if the whole “Iron Man: Steve Rogers” was less of a misdirection and more Marvel hiding their plans right in plain sight? Add to that an alternate version of this image:

The alternate image showed pretty much the same thing except the Iron Man armor was it’s regular red and gold color. That image quickly disappeared and now I can’t seem to find it anywhere. So yeah… Captain America “dies” and then moonlights as Iron Man for a while. Meanwhile, Winter Soldier (a.k.a. Bucky) becomes the new Captain America. As I said, this is just me making some wild assumptions based on all the random and misleading evidence and rumors that are bouncing around out there. If none of this happens I won’t be too surprised. But if it does happen… told you so.

As for my conspiracy theory? Well, I was just wondering if the last few delays for Civil War #7, which saw the book pushed back from January 17th to January 31st and finally all the way to February 21st, have less to do with Steve McNiven’s lazy ass and more to do with an all too common trend that seems to revolve around the climax of almost any major event comic – the rewritten ending! It happened, perhaps most famously, in DC’s Armageddon 2001 when the secret identity of the supervillain Monarch was accidentally leaked as being Captain Atom. A mad scramble at the last second changed Monarch’s identity to be Hawk of Hawk and Dove and thus the story (and continuity) suffered greatly. It’s also rumored that several plot points were altered in DC’s more recent Infinite Crisis, when word of those plot points leaked out. Could it be that Marvel, in response to the news of Captain America’s death hitting the web, actually delayed the final issue of Civil War to change the ending? Don’t ask me… I’m just over here trying to cause trouble, that’s all.

Return of Quick Bits!

Since I’m trying to keep this column short I’ve decided to bring back a feature I used to use back when I first started this column – Quick Bits! It’s more like a news brief, hitting the major headlines and such, without any long winded “opinions” by some tool (a.k.a. Me).

  1. In May DC Comics will kick off a brand new weekly series called Countdown. The year-long series will, appropriately, begin with issue #51, counting backwards from the final issue of 52, which also ships in May. Writer Paul Dini and breakdown artist Keith Giffen will spearhead the book, with covers by Andy Kubert and Tim Townsend. Other writers and artists working on the series include Jimmy Palmiotti & Justin Gray, Tony Bedard, Adam Beechan, Jesus Saiz, Jim Calafiore, Carlos Magno and David Lopez.
  2. Once the “Last Son” storyline by Geoff Johns, Richard Donner and Adam Kubert wraps up (if it ever does) in Action Comics, The Goon creator Eric Powell will join Johns for a 3-part arc set on Bizarro World, which was reintroduced in the pages of Action Comics Annual #10 earlier this month.
  3. Over on his blog artist Skottie Young announced that he is taking over as the new regular artist for New X-Men, starting with issue #37. I just want to know where current New X-Men artist Paco Medina is going. Seriously, I was just about to start picking up that book solely for the Paco Medina artwork; that guy is incredible. At least now I can save a bit of money I guess. No offense, Skottie.
  4. Want to check out the opening (in script form) of Warren Ellis’ upcoming graphic novel, Crècy? Of course you do.
  5. Adam Warren just unveiled the front and back cover (along with the spine!) of his upcoming new graphic novel, Empowered Vol. 1, which ships from Dark Horse Comics on March 14th,

  6. Can’t read the tiny text on the back cover there? Never fear, I got it right here:

“Not only is costumed crimefighter "Empowered" saddled with a less-than-ideal superhero name, but she has to wear a skintight and cruelly revealing “supersuit” that only magnifies her body-image insecurities. Worse yet, the suit’s unreliable powers are prone to failure, repeatedly leaving her in appallingly distressing situations . . . and giving her a shameful reputation as the lamest “cape” in the masks-and-tights game. Nonetheless, she pluckily braves the ordeals of her bottom-rung superheroic life with the help of her “thugalicious” boyfriend (and former Witless Minion) and her hard-drinking, female-ninja girlfriend, not to mention the supervillainous advice from an imprisoned alien demonlord watching DVDs from her coffee table. . .

From Adam Warren—writer/artist of the English-language Dirty Pair comics (the original “Original English-Language Manga” before OEL was cool), and writer of Livewires, Gen13, and Iron Man: Hypervelocity—comes Empowered, a butt-kicking, bootylicious superhero lampoon that raises the bar for long-john lust and low-brow laughs. Remove all previous notions of superhero entertainment from your puny mind . . . and prepare to be Empowered!

  7. And if you’re still not convinced (why wouldn’t you be… it’s Adam Warren, writing and drawing!!!) you can check out a massive 14 page preview for the book right HERE.
  8. Oh look! It’s the cover for Criminal #7!

    Pretty.
