The Bum's Rush by Paul Milligan

The Bum’s Rush #80

WARNING! None of the news or rumors you see here in The Bum’s Rush should be considered FACT until it actually happens. It might never happen. How do you know I’m not just making all this crap up? I could, you know. You’ve been warned!

The Return of You Know Who

Well hey there, everybody. It’s me, Paul Milligan, back at the helm of the lovely starship Bum’s Rush. Did you miss me? Cause I sure as heck missed you guys. After digging my way out of the hellish underground prison where A.C. Hall left me for dead my first thoughts were of you… the lovely reader. My second thoughts were of killing A.C. But then I noticed that he very lovingly took care of this old girl while I was gone, so I just broke his legs. Which he actually appreciated since he’s taking part in NaNoWriMo this month and needs a reason to stay in front of the keyboard pretty much all month. And crippling’s a good way to do it.

Actually, I can’t thank A.C. enough for filling in for me while I was gone. What was supposed to be a month-long guest spot unexpectedly turned into two months, with nary a complaint from my good friend. He turned out some of my absolute favorite Bum’s Rush columns to date, so good that I almost considered putting my name on them anyway and taking credit for the genius within. Almost.

I sincerely hope you guys enjoyed A.C.’s turn on the Bum’s Rush as much as I did… cause the party’s over now! You received a well-earned respite from your cruel master but now I’m back to reestablish my firm, icy-cold grip on your hearts and minds.

The king has returned! Long live the king!

Round Two!

Okay. The real reason I left this column in the capable hands of A.C. for two whole months? I was busting heads and cracking the whip at the Stumblebum Art Sweatsh… I mean, Funland… in scenic Honduras where hundreds of little Honduran… uhm… artists… helped put together our brand new 2006 anthology, Round Two! The kids… er… guys worked night and day, eight days a week (I invented a new day, Bumsday, to keep production on schedule) to make sure that Round Two! was finished in time for
Wizard World Texas.

The workers even began to affectionately refer to the book as “El Libro de la Muerte”, which I was told meant “The Big Book of Fun!” A number of times I even heard them refer to me as “Gran Diablo Blanco”. I never figured out what it meant but I felt honored to have been given a nickname, even one that was whispered in hushed and frightened tones whenever I would enter a room. Anyway, most of them are dead now, so I’ve decided to give the credit for this wonderful book to a handful of the most creative and amazing people I know, the Stumblebum Crew.

Inside the beautiful covers of Round Two! you will find almost 70 pages of brand-new comics and stories by David DeGrand, A.C. Hall, Paul Milligan (hey that’s me!), Dave Sherrill, Bobby Blakey, Neal Langham, Kevin Steele, Dana Place, Garry Brown and Sam Milligan, as well as several surprise guests. We even convinced the amazing David Hopkins, author of Emily Edison, Karma Incorporated and Antigone, to write an introduction for the book, without the slightest threat of bodily injury no less! In it he describes Stumblebum as “a street gang of artistic talent” and never have I read a more accurate description of the kind of creeps I work with.

Well, who wants to see what Stumblebum can do when they’re really ready to rumble? Here’s a twelve-page preview of Round Two! that could kick the crap out of the Jets and the Sharks at the same time:

How could you not want this book? Well, friends, you’ll have your chance to own this masterpiece of ass-kickery in just a few short weeks. The Stumblebum Crew will be debuting the book at
Wizard World Texas, which starts on November 10th. But if you can’t make it out to see us at the show, no doubt due to some sort of horrific accident, then you’ll be able to buy the book right here on this very site, most likely not long after Wizard World raps up.

The “A.C. Hall Is A Liar!” Contest

Most of you probably noticed that a few of the stories that A.C. wrote about during his guest stint were, in fact, complete (and completely hilarious) fabrications. See, A.C. is one heck of a talented writer and sometimes writers are given to wild and fancy flights of artistic tomfoolery (commonly referred to as lying by normal folks). Hey, that’s why there’s a disclaimer. The thing is he wrote these stories so well that some of them are completely indistinguishable from the stories that were based on actual news and events.

So my question is, can you guess which ones are fake? Cause if you can then you’re probably going to want to enter the “A.C. Hall Is A Liar!”* Contest. The first person to correctly name all of the fake stories will win a complete set of Stumblebum Studios comics, including the upcoming Round Two! anthology, plus a few other goodies from the Stumblebum Store.

Okay, a few hints:

There are a total of six fake stories.
Two of the guest columns contain no fake stories at all.
The fake stories are complete fabrications so don’t look for stories that are mostly true but have an element of silliness or contain jokes about said story.

So to enter the contest, first go to the Bum’s Rush Archives and check out column’s 72 through 79. Then just send an email with the subject title “A.C. Hall Is A Liar!” to thesuperleezard@yahoo.com with your six choices and your physical address so I can send you your prize should you win. Good luck to you!

*For the record I don’t really think A.C. is a liar. He’s just very good at telling stories that are not at all true.
